HISTORY OF BETELIFE

Betelife was born out of concern for the suffering

Celia McLellan, founder and president of Charity Bethel International -Betelife, was born in Brazil but lived most of her life in the United States where she works as a school social worker. Upon her return to Brazil Mapimpoverished communities in Brazil and seeing children living under bridges in the midst of rubbish waiting to be snatched by gangs, drugs, and prostitution left an indelible mark in her heart. These scenes have driven her forward to mobilize others to help those in need. Betelife came into existence out of that concern.

In August 2005, Celia McLellan returned to Brazil and filed to open a non-profit organization to help the needy. The Brazilian government approved the application and on November 17, 2005 Betelife was formed under the legal name "Entidade Beneficente Betel." In January 2006, the charity opened its the Hope Center PictBrazilian headquarter and administrative office in Sao Paulo.

Also in 2006, Betelife  became fully incorporated in the U.S.A as a non-profit, public charity organization under section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Since then, Celia McLellan has traveled to Brazil on several occasions to assess needs, evaluate existing resources, develop network with community leaders and recruit workers to carry out Betelife's mission.

Through fund-raising activities and private donations, Betelife purchased land in Brazil and in 2009  broke ground on its first facility The Hope Center. Doors opened on January 8, 2011. The Hope Center is located in a poverty-stricken neighborhood known as Mangabeira, on the outskirts of Feira de Santana, Bahia. The center teaches life skills and brings social, spiritual and emotional support to children, youth and families in need.

With your help, The Hope Center can reach its full potential as a beacon of hope for this community and beyond.

With proper funding and operational support, we plan to duplicate this success in other areas of Brazil and around the globe.
